The Golden Ring of Russia

The Golden Ring of Russia

To the north-east of Moscow on a route that is kind of shaped like a ring there are seven ancient cities of Russia: Suzdal, Vladimir, Pereslavl-Zalesski, Rostov, Kostroma, Sergiev Posad, Yaroslavl, which are called the “Golden Ring”.

The Golden Ring of Russia is the center of the Russian culture

The landmarks of the Golden Ring are protected by the Russian state and included into UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list (for example, Moscow and Saint Petersburg). They embrace masterpieces of folk and ancient art, various crafts and rare icons. There you can get acquainted with development stages of the Russian architecture from churches of the 12th century to modern constructions.

One of the oldest cities included in the Golden Ring of Russia is Rostov, which has lots of historical monuments. The most famous of them are the Rostov Kremlin (the former Bishop’s house of the 17th century) and Rostov campanile (13 bells).

The landmarks of Sergiev Posad are associated with the ensemble of the monastery of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The monastery consists of 50 buildings, the earliest of which is a white stone Trinity Cathedral, 1422. On the iconostasis of the cathedral worked famous painters Daniil Cherny and Andrei Rublev.

In Pereslavl-Zalessky there is a perfectly preserved white stone church, nine ancient churches and six monasteries.

Yaroslavl is the gem of the Volga region. There are more than 140 landmarks and tourist attractions in the city. The most notable of them are the Spaso-Preobrazensky monastery, the Virgin Mary of Tolgmonastery and the Church of Elijah the Prophet.
