Grigory Perelman – a superstar of modern mathematics, the author of the proof of the Poincare’s theorem. And at the same time – just a humble resident of a small apartment in the southern outskirts of St. Petersburg.
Genius of Grigory Perelman
Perelman studied at the mathematical school and already then showed an unprecedented mathematical mind. The talent of Perelman was impossible not to notice.
At the Olympics in Budapest, he was awarded a gold medal for the perfect solution of all presented tasks.
Perelman was accepted without entrance exams to the Department of Mechanics and Mathematics of the Leningrad University.
In 1990 Perelman defended his thesis and went to the US, where he taught mathematics at various universities for six years. After that, he returned home and worked at the Mathematical Institute named after V.A. Steklov. His tenure was interrupted in 2005, as well as all contacts with his colleagues.
The Poincare Conjecture and a “Breakthrough of the Year”
The brightest manifestation of the genius of Perelman was his proof of the Poincare conjecture, which Perelman published in 2002. In 2006 the scientific community recognized the conclusions of Perelman to be true. This event was called by the «Science» magazine a “breakthrough of the year.” For this achievement, Perelman was awarded the “Fields Medal”, and he was also awarded the award by the Clay Mathematics Institute in the amount of one million U.S. dollars.
The Man of the Year
Perelman rejected all the awards, honors and titles.
The proof of the Poincare Conjecture was giftedby him to the whole world and published on the Internet. It glorified him as an incredible genius for whom money did not matter.
Today Perelman lives modestly and quietly, almost like a recluse. And maybe he makes breakthroughs every day, which no money in the world can buy.
Grigory Perelman, who made another big step towards understanding the laws of the Universe, presented to the world another lesson: vanity and avarice are nothing in the world of science.
