The Establishment of Lomonosov Moscow State University
Mikhail Lomonosov – a great Russian scientist- did a lot for the establishment of the university in Moscow in 1755.
Count Ivan Shuvalov supported Lomonosov’s plans for a new university and lobbied them to the Empress. He was a patron of the arts and science.
On 25 January, St. Tatiana’s Day Empress Elizaveta Petrovna signed the decree that a university should be founded in Moscow.
Since then Tatiana’s day became the unofficial Student day. Traditionally, all the russian students are celebrating the holiday.
From the very beginning Moscow State University has a democratic system for studying and working in the university.
E.g. people from different classes of Russian society could study there. Talented but poor students didn’t pay. At present This tradition still exists in this university of Moscow.

The main building of the Moscow State University
Since 1953, the main building of the Moscow State University is situated on Sparrow hills. But in reality MSU is a complex of buildings indeed.
The construction of the Main building is unique.
The main building of MSU is 239.5 meters. It is really high.
There are the world’s largest thermometer and barometer on the Main building of MSU.
Not far from the main Building there is a famous lookout. From this spot you can see lovely views of Moscow and the Main building of the MSU as well. Usually in may you can find lots of Moscow graduates there, just married couples also like to visit this place. When you are in Moscow – you should visit this place for sure! This lookout is also a good spot to see a spectacular display of fireworks in Moscow. But you should come in advance to find the «best places».
