St. Petersburg is the second most populous city in the Russian Federation. It had been the capital of Russia for more than two centuries: from 1712 (when the first Russian Emperor Peter I moved the Russian court there) to 1918 (when the city was renamed Petrograd).

Since its foundation St. Petersburg has been the northern capital of Russia. The city also became the European Capital of Culture not so long ago. It is not just a coincidence – in fact, there are more than 8,000 architectural and cultural monuments in Saint Petersburg. St. Petersburg is globally known for its museums which are the Hermitage, the Cabinet of Curiosities, the Russian Ethnographic Museum and the Russian Museum, and more.

Best time to visit: you can come any time. Note that the “White Nights” (a special period) take place from June 11 to July 2.

Moscow is the capital of Russia and the largest city not only in Russia but also in Europe. It became the Russian political centre on more than one occasion. This city was often a stage for major historical events. However, Moscow always manages to combine respect towards its rich history with new architectural trends.

The city is undoubtedly the most populous in Russia, but it has also large forest and park territories. The city is situated on the Moscow River and lies on the East European Plain in central Russia. The altitude difference is 130 meters.

Moscow has one of the world-deepest underground systems that stands in contrast with a wide range of city skyscrapers.

If you go to the north-east of Moscow and follow a ring-shaped road, you’ll travel through seven ancient Russian towns: Suzdal, Vladimir, Pereslavl- Zalessky, Rostov, Kostroma, Sergiyev Posad, Yaroslavl, which are called the “Golden Ring”.

The Golden Ring is the center of the Russian culture.

The landmarks of the Golden Ring are protected by the Russian state and included into UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites list (for example, Moscow and Saint Petersburg). They embrace masterpieces of folk and ancient art, various crafts and rare icons. There you can get acquainted with development stages of the Russian architecture from churches of the 12th century to modern constructions.
